I’ve been kinda lurking in the background for the last five years, but I’ve reached a point where I need to step out and get some advice on how to get over a hurdle to launching a site. I have been working on different projects for a long time, but with very slow progress. This particular site has grown increasingly important to me. So much so that it has now turned into an urgent situation.
What I failed to anticipate was a shift in my priorities. I’m much more concerned about the goals of the site, rather than the technical development. Even though I’m certain that I could work through this by myself, the very thought of doing this has become an impediment to launching the site. Basically, I’ve stalled out, but I can’t let that happen.
I currently have a generic D8 site that is hosted, but not promoted, on GreenGeeks. It’s called PainedPolitics.org, which should provide some idea as to its urgency, but it actually goes back several years. It also has a development site that will work with Drush, and Composer. All that is needed, besides content, is a simple theme that can host a forum, polls, blogs, articles, and so forth.
To this end, what I think I need is two-fold; I need someone that will help me setup a decent work-flow environment and then teach me to use it. I’ve spent way too much time exploring the possible solutions, so I have a decent understanding of the tools being used, but I never settled on the “best solution”. Basically, I don’t want to be dependent upon some company that is more committed to their cash stream than the site. I’ve been stumbling through updates and so on, but I’m not proficient in restoring backups and have had to reinstall numerous times. The development site is new and is just for general maintenance, testing backups, using drush and composer, etc.
I know that there are many companies that are eager to perform this type of work, but among other reasons, I’m hesitant to over-commit what limited resources I do have. The primary reason for this is that it is a non-profit initiative and I can’t contribute much financially, perhaps a small hourly rate, but I believe in the message and that it will quickly attract the attention of donors once it gets the correct exposure. This is extremely important because extensive development will be necessary before long.
I’m only vaguely familiar with the professional development processes, but it seems that I may be looking for something of a specialty niche. Does that exist within this community? Is there a better place for me to place this inquiry. I’ve been a fly on the wall for too long and I urgently need to jump start this site. Any useful information will be greatly appreciated.
