Links in PHP code

I have a page footer where I am using PHP Code format. Before I added SSL the links used to work as follows:

<?php $site_name = variable_get('site_name', 'Drupal'); print $site_name; ?><sup>&reg;</sup> 1999-<?php echo date('Y') ?> <span class="bull-color">&bull;</span> <a href="http://www.organizingmatters.com/acknowledgements">Acknowledgements</a> <span class="bull-color">&bull;</span> <a href="http://www.organizingmatters.com/disclosure">Privacy Policy</a>
<br>Telephone: 732-807-5055 <span class="bull-color">&bull;</span> E-mail: [email protected]

But now I have to add two line breaks after the PHP code to get the links to work:

<?php $site_name = variable_get('site_name', 'Drupal'); print $site_name; ?><sup>&reg;</sup> 1999-<?php echo date('Y') ?> <span class="bull-color">&bull;</span>
<br><br>
<a href="https://www.organizingmatters.com/acknowledgements">Acknowledgements</a> <span class="bull-color">&bull;</span> <a href="https://www.organizingmatters.com/disclosure">Privacy Policy</a>
<br>Telephone: 732-807-5055 <span class="bull-color">&bull;</span> E-mail: [email protected]
