I’m currently in a position where I have an old Drupal 6.38 site that was built for me, by someone else who can no longer work on it. I want to learn Drupal, and other programming skills, so that I can update it to a newer version (7 or 8???), keep it maintained and get to a position whereby I can modify/develop my site whenever I need to.
Looking around online I found the Acquia Dev pack + Build A Module videos. I’ve also seen MAMP – I’m on a Mac – and a couple of other different download packs. As I understand it, these packs offer an on-board practice space where I can learn the ins and outs of Drupal. But is there one that’s better than the others, or does it not matter too much?
If I go with Acquia Dev, looking at the Build A Module site I was thinking I should watch the PHP videos first. Does that sound like a wise start point?
I’m quite happy to spend a lot of time learning and watching videos, but I’d also like to know if I should update my Drupal version now, how that would be done, and if I would be in danger of losing any of the information currently in/on my site should I make such an update?
If anyone can shine a light on any of this for me, so I can start my journey, I’d greatly appreciate it!
